Cooper Bikes: la evolución de un icono.

El apellido Cooper está íntimamente ligado a la historia de las 4 ruedas y desde el año 2009 también a la historia de las 2 ruedas.
Cooper Bikes es una empresa fundada por Charlie Cooper, nieto de John Cooper, creador de la escudería Cooper de F1 y preparador del Mini Cooper. Su padre es Mike Cooper, que lideró la transición de la empresa hacia el nuevo formato en el año 2000.
Pero Charlie Cooper puede definirse perfectamente por sí mismo; es empresario, piloto de la MINI Challenge PRO y, afortunadamente para nosotros, una persona extraordinaria con la que da gusto conversar.

TCM: Nosotros no empezaremos preguntándote por tu familia. ¿Cuál es tu sabor de helado favorito?
Charlie Cooper: ¡Vainilla! Mi postre favorito es el Affogato (helado de vainilla con un café espresso) o puede que también el Tiramisú.

TCM: Vale, ahora que hemos roto el hielo, hablemos de la familia. Parece que el gusto por el motor es algo genético y se transmite de padres a hijos; Cooper, Andretti, Hill, Stewart… ¿Cómo se vive este legado desde dentro?
Charlie Cooper: Nunca me percaté de lo especial que era mi abuelo, John Cooper, hasta que fui al British Grand Prix con él cuando era un niño. Todos los pilotos famosos de aquella época querían hablar con él. Es increíble todo lo que también ha hecho mi padre, Mike Cooper, al coger el Mini Cooper y traerlo de vuelta para lanzar el John Cooper Works. Pronto me di cuenta de que esto no se iba a tratar de compararme con mi padre o con mi abuelo, iba a tratarse de mantener el espíritu Cooper vivo, a mi propia manera.

TCM: ¿Cómo ha influido tu relación con la familia en todo este proceso? ¿Te han inspirado de alguna manera?
Charlie Cooper: Aunque me he movido desde los automóviles hacia el pedaleo, en el negocio perdura el mismo espíritu. Mi abuelo fue un auténtico innovador y creo que estoy intentando mantener el espíritu de la innovación dentro de la marca actual. Todavía no he tenido mi propia “revolución del motor trasero“, pero espero que llegará pronto.

TCM: Y rodeado de motores ¿De dónde sale la idea de poner en marcha una empresa como Cooper Bikes?
Charlie Cooper: Me siguen encantando los motores estruendosos, pero tras mudarme a Londres pronto me di cuenta de que los coches no eran el mejor modo de transporte para este tipo de ciudad. Iba a mi trabajo en publicidad (después de dejar el negocio familiar en Sussex, trabajando para John Cooper Works) cada día en bicicleta y eso me inspiró para construir una bici de calidad que además fuera estéticamente bonita.

TCM: ¿Cómo te ha influído personalmente este reto?
Charlie Cooper: Ahora la empresa Cooper está centrada en las E Bikes. La movilidad urbana se dirige hacia un gran cambio y mi objetivo es poner a Cooper en la cabeza de esta transformación.

TCM: ¿En qué se diferencia Cooper Bikes del resto de marcas del mercado?
Charlie Cooper: Cooper siempre utiliza lo mejor y más avanzada tecnología y la pone a disposición de sus clientes de para mejorar la experiencia de usuario. Queremos crear una gama de bicicletas y E Bikes que se diferencien de los competidores por su tecnología, pero que aún así, se mantengan belleza y funcionalidad.

TCM: El Mini Cooper es conocido mundialmente, entre otros factores, por su capacidad de ser personalizado. ¿Sigue Cooper Bikes el mismo concepto?
Charlie Cooper: Nuestra gama de E bikes sale en 4 colores, pero la verdadera belleza de nuestras bicicletas y E Bikes es que los propios ciclistas suelen customizar cada unidad. Por otro lado, también estamos relanzando nuestra oferta de personalización, para que los clientes se puedan llevar un modelo absolutamente único y especial. (www.cooperbikes.com/custom)

TCM: ¿Cómo ves el futuro de la movilidad urbana?
Charlie Cooper: Las grandes ciudades están bloqueadas y los planes de infraestructuras se mueven rápido. Las ciudades del futuro darán prioridad a los peatones, bicicletas y E Bikes, por encima de los vehículos de motor. Mientras que los coches eléctricos cada vez formarán más parte de nuestras ciudades, yo creo que se acabarán usando más en recorridos largos entre ciudades. También creo que en el futuro, coches y formas personales de transporte individual convivirán en más harmonía que ahora.

TCM: Los primeros modelos de Cooper Bikes se llamaron igual que los legendarios bólidos de la F1 y parece que cosecharon el mismo éxito…
Charlie Cooper: Cuando salimos en 2009 no sabíamos qué esperar de la crítica. Simplemente, construimos lo que nos gustaba. Fue espectacular poder ganar premios de GQ y especialmente el de Wallpaper por diseño, pero para mi lo más importante de todo es que la gente que las compra y las usa, las adora.

TCM: Hemos visto que la F1 también ha puesto su magia sobre algunos modelos de Cooper Bikes (Kers, materiales, geometría, pesos, “motor”…)
Charlie Cooper: El sistema KERS de nuestro motor Zehus es verdaderamente eficiente. Siempre trabajamos con nuestros partners para añadir elementos innovadores y útiles.

TCM: Hablando de competición, tú has podido sentir en tu propia piel lo que significa ponerse al volante de un MINI de carreras. ¿Cómo fue tu primera experiencia con un R53?
Charlie Cooper: Fue algo extraordinariamente estresante, porque nunca antes había corrido. El MINI R53 fue el coche perfecto para aprender, incluso siendo una competición con un nivel muy alto en UK, en su clase. Mi primera carrera fue en Donnington y aunque no me fue del todo bien, disfruté de cada minuto e incluso hasta pude adelantar a unos cuantos.

TCM: Pero tras ese inicio, has llegado hasta la categoría Cooper PRO. ¿Cómo describirías la experiencia?
Charlie Cooper: Correr con los JCWs es una experiencia extraordinaria; los coches en UK, Italia y Japón son unos cochazos de carreras impresionantes. Se dice que son como los MINI de calle, pero he tenido que aprender a domesticarlos, ya que como cualquier coche de carreras con tracción delantera rápida pueden ser bastante nerviosos antes de que las llantas traseras alcancen la temperatura adecuada. No puedo esperar para ponerme al volante en uno de ellos nuevamente este año.

TCM: De recién llegado a liderar la carrera en Monza. ¿Tenemos piloto para más temporadas? ¿Te has enamorado definitivamente de la competición? ¿Es un matrimonio o es un amor de verano?
Charlie Cooper: Estoy absolutamente enamorado del mundo de las carreras. Intentaré volver a los circuitos todo lo que pueda, tanto si es con un F56 JCW como con un Mini Cooper clásico, en pistas como Goodwood. No tendré tiempo para correr durante toda la temporada este año, porque estaré bastante ocupado con las bicicletas y como embajador de MIN, pero definitivamente, correré algunas carreras sueltas.

TCM: Y sabiendo lo que te gustan las carreras…¿nunca te has planteado fabricar bicicletas orientadas al mundo de la competición?
Charlie Cooper: Nuestro objetivo principal ahora son las bicicletas urbanas y las E Bikes, con una personalización preciosa. Pero…nunca digas nunca jamás…

TCM: ¿Qué consejo le darías al Charlie Cooper de hace 10 años?
Charlie Cooper: No te preocupes sobre lo que la gente pueda pensar… sólo haz lo que tú creas que es correcto.

Cooper Bikes: the evolution of an icon.

The last name Cooper is linked to the history of the 4 wheels and since 2009 also to the history of the 2 wheels. Cooper Bikes is a company founded 10 years ago by Charlie Cooper, grandson of John Cooper, creator of the F1 Cooper team and the Mini Cooper. His father is Mike Cooper, who led the company’s transition to the new format in 2000.
But Charlie Cooper can define himself perfectly; He is an entrepreneur, pilot of the MINI Challenge UK and, fortunately for us, an extraordinary person.

TCM: We won’t start this interview asking about your family. What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Charlie Cooper: Vanilla. My favourite desert is Affogato (vanilla ice cream with a shot of espresso) or maybe Tiramisu.

TCM: Ok, now that we’ve broken the ice, let’s talk about the family. It seems that the taste for the engine is genetic and is transmitted from parents to their sons; Cooper, Andretti, Hill, Stewart … How do you live this legacy from within?

Charlie Cooper: I never realised how special my grandfather, John Cooper, was until I went to the British Grand Prix with him when I was a young child. All the famous racing drivers of the time wanted to speak to him. It’s a amazing how much my father, Mike, has also done from bringing the Mini Cooper back to launching John Cooper Works. I soon realised it wasn’t about comparing myself to my father and grandfather but keeping the Cooper spirit alive in my own way.

TCM: How has your relationship with the family influenced this whole process? Have they inspired you in any way?
Charlie Cooper: Although I have moved from motorcars to pedal power with the business the same spirit carries on. My grandfather was a true innovator and I think I am trying to keep the spirit of innovation in the brand today. I haven’t had my rear engine revolution yet but I hope it will come.

TCM: You were born surrounded by loud engines. Where did you get the idea of starting a company like Cooper Bikes?
Charlie Cooper: I still love loud engines but moving to London I soon realised that the motorcar was not the best form of transport for the city. I commuted to my job in advertising (after leaving the family business in Sussex working on John Cooper Works) every day on my bicycle and it inspired me to build a quality bike that was also beautiful.

TCM: How has this challenge personally influenced you?
Charlie Cooper: Now Cooper’s main focus is E Bikes. Urban transportation is going through a major shift and my aim is to get Cooper at the forefront of this transformation.

TCM: What can Cooper Bikes offer as a main difference from other brands in the market?
Charlie Cooper: Cooper always uses the best, forward thinking technology and make it available to improve the experience for the user. We want to create a range of bikes and E bikes that are separated from the competition by the technology they use but still maintaining a beautiful functionality.

TCM: The Mini Cooper is known worldwide, among other factors, for its ability to individualize and personalize. Does Cooper Bikes follow the same concept?
Charlie Cooper: Our range of E bikes come in 4 colour options but the beauty with bikes and e bikes is that riders often customize their rides over time. We are also relaunching our Custom offering where customers can buy a unique special bike from us. (www.cooperbikes.com/custom)

TCM: How do you see the future of urban mobility?
Charlie Cooper: Cities are gridlocked and infrastructure planning is moving fast. Cities in the future will prioritize pedestrian, cycle and e bikes over the motor car. Whilst Electric cars will become more part of the fabric of our cities I think they will be used more for longer journeys between cites. I also see cars and more personal forms of transport, like cycling, working more in harmony in the future.

TCM: The first Cooper Bikes models were called the same name as the legendary F1 racing cars and it seems they reaped the same success
Charlie Cooper: When we launched in 2009 we didn’t know what to expect from critics. We just built what we liked. It was brilliant to win awards from GQ and especially Wallpaper for a design award but what’s more important is that the people who buy them and ride them love them.

TCM: We have seen that F1 has also put its magic on some Cooper Bikes models
Charlie Cooper: The KERS system on our Zehus motor is really efficient. We are always working with our partners to add innovative and useful features.

TCM: Speaking of competition, you have been able to feel in your own skin what it means to get behind the wheel of a race car. How was your first experience with a MINI R53?
Charlie Cooper: It was extremely nerve racking as I had never raced before. The R53 was the perfect car to learn in even if the competition was very good here in the UK in that class. My first race was at Donnington and although I finished near the back of the field I loved every minute of it and even enjoyed a few overtakes.

TCM: You have reached the Cooper PRO category. How would you describe the experience?
Charlie Cooper: Racing in the JCWs is a real experience and the cars in the UK, Italy and Japan are all full blown race cars. They are said to be like MINI touring cars. I have had to learn how to tame them as with any fast front wheel drive race car they can be quite nervous before the rear tyres are up to temperature. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel in one of them again this year.

TCM: From newcomer to lead the race in Monza. Do we have a pilot for more seasons? Have you definitely fallen in love with the competition? Is it a marriage or is it a summer love?
Charlie Cooper: I am absolutely in love with racing. I will also try and get on track as much as possible whether it is a modern f56 JCW or classic Mini Cooper at tracks like Goodwood. I haven’t got the time to race a full season this year as I am busy working on the bikes and as an ambassador for MINI but I will definitely be racing at a few individual races.

TCM: Have you ever considered making bicycles oriented to the world of competition?
Charlie Cooper: Our main focus right now is on urban e bikes and beautiful unique custom bikes. But never say never.

TCM: What advice would you give to the Charlie Cooper from 2009?
Charlie Cooper: Don’t worry about what other people think… just do what you think is right.
